Thoughts on the Lamentations of the Flame Princess Campaign
I'm sure by now just about everyone who reads these old school gaming blogs has heard that the Lamentations of the Flame Princess campaign is over. Four projects were successful in funding. I offer a most sincere congratulations to all of them. There are lots of folks that are going to be debating the outcome of this and I think it is most worthy of discussion. But right now, I want to talk about my campaign, Strange and Sinister Shores. It came nowhere close to funding. I had hoped it would do a lot better than it did, but I also realized that I was competing with a lot of folks with more street cred than me. Frankly, I'm honored that I was asked to the game. I realize that to stand on equal footing with some of the other campaigns would have required more salesmanship from me than I was able to do or even felt comfortable in doing. Having said all of this, I do think that Strange and Sinister Shores has some merit and I'm committed to fully developing the project. So what does that mean? I'm going to change up a little bit. The original parameters called for a 36-44 page adventure. I'm going to expand on that and make it a mini-setting. I've already talked to Daisey and she's up for helping on the art front so that means full color art and maps. So, it'll probably take me a little while to accomplish, but yeah, I want to do this. Hopefully, you folks will want to support the end result. More to follow...
I haven't collected all my thoughts yet, but if this event has done nothing more than stir up a few to publish (one way or another) - then WOO-HOO!!!
ReplyDeleteGo For It! Just have fun doing it.
ReplyDeleteWould love to see a full color version from you and Daisy. Count me in. Also wrote a review for DELVE! Suggestion, put up the cover or little banner for your zine so people can find where to buy is easier. You got great pictures, use them man!
ReplyDelete@Dithering Fool - Exactly!
ReplyDelete@GarrisonJames - Oh, I fully intend to on both accounts ;).
@Tim - I plan on doing a full color collection at some point - I don't want to put the cart before the horse though ;). Point taken on the banner and I'll address it. Oh, THANKS for the great review!
I don't think it has anything to do with street cred; you've got a better name in this community than I have! I don't think we'll ever know why some of these things hit their goal and others didn't but I can't imagine that it's any judgement on the writers and artists.
ReplyDeleteI'm pleased you're still going to put yours out in some form, because I want to see it.
Where I think Kelvin has a great 'street cred' in the OSR, he's right on about what funds and what doesn't. When the first announcement was issued about the campaign I thought Cook would get to the goal easily. And he's got a ton of 'street cred'. It's great for all the ones that did get funded, especially Kelvin's. I think your offer was a brilliant move and really got the ball rolling again.
DeleteMy campaign stalled early on, as I expected, so I made the offer to do the adventure for free, thinking that it wouldn't make its goal. That got a bit of interest, but it stalled again around the half way point and the surge in the last couple of days was all down to some enthusiastic promotion from others; I am humbled by the support I received.
DeleteAnyway, I should stop talking about myself on Johnathan's blog.
Heh, Kelvin, don't worry. I'm glad your project got funded! I am excited to see what you come up with.
DeleteGlad to hear that we will still see yours published in some format!
ReplyDeleteYeah, I'm still going to do a Lamentations adventure with this. I thought the premise was cool so I'll still go with it. Of course, it's not what I think is cool that ultimately matters in terms of putting out product, but I find the best gaming material is the stuff that the creator(s) had a blast doing and put themselves into it and I fully intend on doing just that ;).
