Weekly Creature Feature: Lethenex and more on Maedsid

Wow, it's been a while since I last did the weekly creature feature! This time, I've got a new critter that will be making an appearance in my Sea of O'Sr Adventure the Isles of Maedsid. Maedsid will have a both very earthly Celtic/Dark Ages/IronAge/Bronze Age component to it and a more unearthly feel to it. The Isles of Maedsid were ages ago untethered from the fabric of the material plane. Over time, this has caused some dimensional degredation and the Isles have experienced ecroachment of entities from beyond the material plane. The Lethenex is one such creature. I plan on using many non-standard creatures in Isle of Maedsid. In fact, I'm going to try and use only monsters of my own devising so that the adventure has its own consistency and feel. Some of the critters that I expect to be making an appearance are the Alitae, the Arepyiai, the Six Mouthed Goo Monster, the Black Dog, and the Dead Man's Chest amongst others. As with all of my weekly creature features, the Lethenex is designated open content so feel free to use it as you wish (aside for the art which is not open content and is copyright John Bingham - me). Again stated out for use with LL, it should be a fairly simple matter for a DM to convert to suit the DM's needs. So without further ado, the Lethenex:

Name: Lethenex
No. Enc: 1-8
Alignment: Chaotic
Movement: 60’ (20’), Special
Armor Class: 7
Hit Dice: 4
Attacks: 3
Damage: 1d6, 1d6, special (constitution drain)
Save: F3
Morale: 8
Hoard Class: VI

Description: These creatures are from beyond the material plane and are a strange mixture of plant, animal, mineral, and fungus. The Lethenex usually appear due to weak spots in the dimensional membranes that separate the material plane from their dimension. Lethenex are not sentient by the conventional understanding and their motivations and drives are completely alien. The only apparent drive is that they are attracted to the material plane to feed on elements and energies specific to the material plane. Lethenex are capable of dimensionally warping between their dimension and the material plane but doing so requires a great expenditure of energy. Lethenex possess crystalline “talons” along the edges of their membranous “wings” in which they can use to attack for 1d6 points of damage. In addition, the Lethenex have a proboscis that they can use to drain life energy in the form of permanent constitution drain. The Lethenex’s ability to dimensionally warp requires three rounds to accomplish, during which time it cannot move or attack.

The Lethenex appears as a six to eight foot monstrosity with leathery folds that radiate from a central, fibrous, roughly cylindrical body. The Lethenex possesses rough, crystalline talons along the “wing” folds that it can use much as claws. The Lethenex has a sensory nest at one end of its body that is where the proboscis extends from along with many crystalline “eyes”. The opposite end of the stalk has a grouping of arthropod like legs that it can use in conjunction with its wing folds for conventional mobility. The Lethenex are capable of surviving the vacuum of space and are therefore immune to gaseous attacks and cold based attacks. Electrical, fire, and acid attacks do normal damage.

  3. There's certainly a lack of this kind of bizarre creature. It's a very good example of thinking beyond, and I like it too.
